How long have you been Blogging?
I technically started blogging in March of this year, but I was giving myself every reason to avoid working on it. I was too tired from work (I didn’t start working from home, due to COVID-19, until mid-March). I was having writer’s block. I would tell myself that I’d write tomorrow. So on and so on. Then one day, I had two friends from different parts of my life reach out within a span of 2 hours asking me when my next post was coming and if I was still writing my blog. I could only take this as a sign from the universe that I needed to get back on-my-grind. I decided that if this was something I really wanted to do, I had to take it more seriously. And I’m proud to say that this month I did just that!
Why did you start your blog?
Back in January, I was attending a seminar geared towards Black people and building wealth. I remember walking into the room and realizing that myself and one other female were probably the youngest people in here by at least a decade if not more. This stuck out to me. We should be trying to reach way more younger people when it comes to financial education. I get that most young people aren’t mindful or concerned with their finances beyond what they want in front of them right now. And I get it. I once was there too; however, this was concerning. Then it got worse, the instructor kept saying that he couldn’t help you unless you had money. Now, as a 30-something, I do pretty well for myself, financially speaking, but I was completely turned off by this stipulation. I started to think that if I was younger, I would have probably walked away feeling like I would never be able to learn methods to help me become more financially stable or build wealth. At that point, I decided I wanted to start something that would educate younger people to help them navigate the know-hows of basic personal finance, without making them feel like they didn’t belong or if their net worth didn’t equal a certain amount, they weren’t wanted.
If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be and why?
Definitely a dog! They truly are man's best friend and provide unconditional love.
I used to have a dog. His name was Brooklyn. And I absolutely adored him, even though he was headstrong and a little bit of a bully lol. Unfortunately, I eventually had to give him away. I was moving out of the area and didn’t have the funds or the support to ensure that he wouldn’t have to spend the majority of his days alone. Fortunately, I found an amazing family with a little girl who would have the energy and time to keep up with this little lovable trouble-maker.
Look at this little cutie.💓😍
If you could listen to one musical artist for the rest of eternity, who would it be?
So, I’m going to cheat a little here and change it from musical artist just to musical. And of course it would definitely be HAMILTON! Guys, I cannot explain how much I absolutely love this musical. I listen to it literally everyday. The song, ‘Non-Stop’, is my inspiration for me to write. It has helped keep me motivated through writing many posts and ‘I am not throwing away my shot!’
Do you have any regrets?
I just recently re-watched Season 2 of the FX show, “Atlanta”. In one of the episodes, one of the characters, Darius, states that he only would allow himself two regrets in life and that if any more, then one of his friends would have to kill him. This question reminded me of that scene. I aspire to be like Darius (minus the “killing me” part). I know I’ve had many regrets in life, but as I get older I’m trying my best to change this. We only have one life to live and I don’t want mine to be riddled with ‘what-ifs’.
How old were you when you found out Santa wasn’t real?
I was probably around 6. As a kid, you're told that Santa comes down the chimney to deliver gifts but we didn’t have a chimney in my childhood home, so it just wasn’t adding up. I think I actually asked my parents about this and they told me that they just leave the door unlocked for Santa. This sounded very suspicious and not very safe but I played along for another year or two.
If you could have one super power, what would it be?
Teleportation! I hate commuting. I’d rather just be there. Think of all the time you’d save and how many places you could see if you could just teleport.
Who is your biggest motivation?
There isn’t just one person that motivates me. There are many people I’ve come into contact with over the course of my life that have motivated me in so many different ways.
Which blog post are you most proud of writing?
As of right now, I’m most proud of my blog post ‘Show Up, Speak Out, and Most Importantly Vote.’ It allowed me to talk about important issues and something else that is important to me other than finances. Check it out the link is above.
If you could change your name to anything, what would it be?
Honestly, I don’t think I would. I think my name fits me so well. It’s an older name but still fresh and unique; like me or at least I think so lol. But I’ve always been told I was an old soul. I had a cousin that used to call me ‘Ms. Beasley’ and an uncle that gave me the moniker ‘Grandma’ lol. I was also once told I was an enigma wrapped in a riddle, I was told that once when they thought they had me figured out, I would do something unexpected. But hey that’s me, I’m just SDot.

This was a cool blog. I feel like I know you a bit more now. That puppy was too cute. I want a puppy but for the same reasons can't get one. I agree that the voting one was one of my favorite blogs from you so far. And I love Hamation so you can give me that musical all day long. Really like how everyone is reaching out and supporting each other. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ez! And only 4 more days to Hamilton!
DeleteLove this entire post. Thank you for helping people learn about personal finance. I never really learned about it during school and now that I am trying to learn, i do get the ring around of you need money to spend before you can get the help that you need. So i either go to youtube and search up dave ramsey for tips. But its good to know that you are available to help as well. Thanks for sharing xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Josie! Yes, I am here and available! I'm trying to create a safe space for people to learn about finances and not feel judged or chastised because they didn't know something (I, too, did not learn this in school). This is a learning process for a lot of us and I'd like people to feel included and not excluded when they're ready to learn.
